Overview

The Serengeti is one of the planet’s most important natural ecosystems. Its vast grass plains, scattered acacia woodlands, and granite kopjes support a complete predator–prey system that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. Known to the Maasai as Siringet (“endless plains”), the park is globally celebrated for the Great Migration, a continuous, rainfall-driven movement of grazing animals across the landscape.

  • Altitude: 1,100–2,000 m
  • Annual rainfall: 900–1,000 mm

  • Over 1.3 million wildebeest, plus zebras and gazelles
  • Africa’s highest density of predators: lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas
  • Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, elands
  • Endangered black rhino and African wild dog
  • More than 530 bird species, including many migrants
